Oil For Your Lamp - Message #9
Date - April 3, 2020
Palm Branches - We have them! They will be available next year, as a memory of this battle we are in. We hand them out when we are victoriously on the other side of this health event.
A Story Like None Other - Today was the burial of 32-year-old, Zachary John Salewski. At least four squad cars led the 18 vehicle procession from Pfotenhauer Funeral Home to Nicolet Gardens. Only a handful of family members were allowed out of their vehicles. Those folks spaced themselves around the casket. Everyone else watched in the distance from their vehicles. I assure you, our lives are too short not to read the inspiration of this young man’s story. His mother shared, “The last word he said shortly before his passing was, ’Wow!’”
Putting Tools in Your Toolbox
Who Is Really Asleep? - Take a look at this incredible painting above these words. This comes from an account in the Scripture where the disciples and Jesus are in a boat. There is a storm.
Jesus is asleep on a cushion on the stern of the boat. The disciples are afraid they’re going to drown. Specifically they are scared to death that they are going to die! Read it here.
There are some very deep truths buried inside this event.
Our all-knowing Jesus is very aware of what’s going on.
He is physically asleep yet conscious of the danger.
On the other hand, the disciples are physically awake but spiritually asleep.
The storm is used as a test of their faith.
What we learn here is that, when threats of death come to us, we wake up and go to the only One who can save us.
Jesus has been calmly waiting to hear from them.
A lot of times there are people we know and love and we fail to call them. Why do we wait to communicate with them? Perhaps we’ve been doing social distancing before it ever had that name. What can we do to keep our relationships alive?
And why is it we wait so long to call on our Lord? I’m wondering if this doesn’t grieve Him, that often we talk to Him only when we're in trouble. This reminds us that our faith is a relationship with the living God.
The health crisis that the world is facing right now is just like those crashing waves in the painting above. The threat of death is rattling the human heart and soul. Some are trying to dull the pain, some are trying to escape it. Intended or not, this health situation is a test for us. Our God is waiting to hear from us like Jesus resting on the cushion in the storm. We are the ones that are supposed to wake up. It’s time to get our spiritual house in order.
May our worship be more meaningful than ever. May the readings that we hear and the prayers we say have a powerful transforming affect our lives.
He wants our relationship with Him to be active, alive and constant. Let’s not wait for a storm to be call on Christ!
Worship on Palm Sunday - Someone asked if there are any special things we can plan at home for Palm Sunday worship. The Bible tells us, people laid their coats down on the pavement as Jesus came through riding on the donkey. Consider laying a coat or two on the living room floor as you watch the streaming worship service. Light some candles. If you have children, perhaps cut out some palm branches with construction paper and color them ahead of time - waving them during the reading. Make a memory!
Verse for The Day - Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast - Isaiah 26:20
Prayer - In the Name of the Father, of the Son, of the Holy Spirit, Amen [+] Lord sometimes we think that You’re asleep and not watching what’s going on. Often the opposite is true, we are spiritually asleep and not reaching out and talking to You, seeking Your help, Your guidance, Your wisdom and the peace You promise for our hearts. Forgive us Lord. Help us to fan our faith in the flame. In a sense, we actually thank You for the crashing waves around us, as they force us to run to Your saving rescuing arms. In the Name of the Father, of the Son, of the Holy Spirit, Amen [+]
Humor for The Day - A priest and a pastor are standing by the side of a road holding up a sign that reads “The end is near! Turn around now before it’s too late!” A passing driver yells, “You guys are nuts!” and speeds past them. From around the curve, they hear screeching tires—then a big splash. The priest turns to the pastor and says, “Do you think we should just put up a sign that says ‘Bridge Out’ instead?”
